Useful facts about argan oil

How do you recognize good argan oil?

You can often find argan oil for a cheap price, but watch out! A lot of mixed oil is offered as argan oil. If you want to make sure that you are dealing with real argan oil, put your bottle of oil in the fridge or freezer for a while. If the oil solidifies, then you are dealing with real argan oil. If the oil remains liquid or half is solidified and half is liquid, then you are unfortunately dealing with another type of oil or an argan oil mixed with another type of oil.

Argan oil also has a distinct recognizable scent. If the oil is odorless, you are most likely dealing with a mixed oil.

How long does argan oil last?

If argan oil is stored in a cool and dark place, it can be kept for at least 24 months after the production date and even longer. It is not known exactly how long argan oil can be kept. The quality of the argan oil will decrease after these 24 months, but it will certainly not spoil. We always recommend to store argan oil in a cool and dark place so that you retain optimum quality.

Sometimes "flakes" appear in the oil when it is stored in the refrigerator. This is not bad the oil can still be used. This is because the oil is not completely filtered but this says nothing about the quality. Once out of the fridge, they dissolve and the oil looks normal again.

Why is it also called the liquid gold of Morocco?

It takes a lot of time and work to produce argan oil. Argan trees only grow in the south-west of Morocco. The argan tree is therefore very rare and an endangered tree species and is now protected by UNESCO. One argan tree is good for around 30 kilos of unpeeled argan fruits per season.

The hard shell is removed by machine or manually. This is done manually by smashing the skin with a hammer. The inner nuts must not be damaged.

It takes approximately 20 hours (3 working days) to produce 3 liters of argan oil manually. This is the most common way of producing.

All in all it is therefore a lot of work. That is why it is called the liquid gold of Morocco.

Nice to know

Goats also love the fruits of the argan tree. They often easily climb the tallest trees to eat the nuts. Pretty crazy to see a goat in a tree.

The second skin of the fruit is so hard that even the goat will not break it and it will not be digested.
